Obituary for Charles DeJesus

Charles DeJesus
On Friday, April 24, 2020, Charles passed away at the age of 66 from COVID-19 complications. He was welcomed into eternal life and reunited with his sister, Maria del Carmen LaTorre who passed away on November 13, 2019 from cancer.
Charles is survived by 2 sisters, Zaida DeJesus and Eunice Acevedo, and a soulmate, Diana Sito.
Charles was a man who gave unconditionally of himself to a stranger as he would to the many friends and family members he so loved. He was a loving brother, uncle, cousin, friend, colleague, confidante but above all else, Charles was a man who truly possessed a teacher’s heart.
Charles worked for Verizon for 15 years as a coin collector and finally was promoted into a managerial position. He always wanted to be a teacher and in his forties, he decided to go to college and pursue his lifelong dream.
Charles became laser focused with regards to his lifelong ambition. He wholeheartedly dedicated himself to his studies and obtained his Associates from Nassau Community College, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Hofstra University and did so with Honors. In addition, he wrote 2 papers on the Vietnam War that were published and shared with other students while studying for his Master’s degree. Charlies taught for several years at the Catherine and Count Basie Middle School in Queens and later on at Brentwood High School where he influenced many young lives by sharing his passion of History as well as providing guidance to assist young minds.
Charles was a lifelong learner and was passionate about variety of things in life…..music, photography, developing of photography film, voracious reader, computers and their inner workings, cooking….a true Renaissance Man of the 21st century!
Final memorial and farewell were on Thursday, May 21st at 10 am. Services will be private and a Memorial Mass to celebrate Charles’ life will be scheduled in the future.
